Violence Erupts Along The Gaza Strip As Israel Comes Under Attack
Violence erupted over the weekend along the Israel-Gaza border. And the death toll continues to rise. Years have passed since this area has seen such devastation and intense assaults.
Within 24 hours, Palestinian militants reportedly fired more than 600 rockets into southern Israel. At least four Israelis have been killed. The number wounded is at 234 as of this writing.
And as the alarms sounded in Israel, border roads were shut down, schools were canceled and many civilians took refuge in bomb shelters.
Israel’s Iron Dome defense system went into high alert, intercepting over 150 rockets. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) launched over 250 attacks against Palestinian military targets in Gaza.
President Trump tweeted his own reaction: “Once again, Israel faces a barrage of deadly rocket attacks by terrorist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad. We support Israel 100% in its defense of its citizens ... To the Gazan people – these terrorist acts against Israel will bring you nothing but more misery. END the violence and work towards peace – it can happen!”
This sudden flare up along the border comes on the heels of Ziad al-Nakhaleh, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Secretary-General, vowing to target and destroy major cities within Israel if the IDF harmed or killed any members of armed Palestinian factions.
Nakhaleh’s threat was in response to the IDF accusation of Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives firing a rocket that landed off the Israeli coast at the end of April.
According to the IDF, the intended target was an Israeli community along the southern border.
