May 01, 2014

We are midway through our medical missions week in the capital city of Ethiopia and our staff is catching us up on the exciting things going on there. From the field The group arrived safely into Ethiopia and in good spirits. As the medical missions team was making its way through customs with the medical bags, the x-ray machines suddenly went down and we were able to move through customs quickly. All of our equipment made it with no issues. The eye team arrived later and their operating m...

Medical Missions: Addis Ababa Clinic Underway

April 29, 2014

The second of our 2014 medical missions is underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Primarily an eye and dental clinic we are also able to see some general medical patients. Medical missio...

Prayers in the Face of Hatred

April 25, 2014

It’s happening. Again, and still. And it’s sickening. You have probably already heard the news that Jewish People in the Eastern Ukraine city of Donetsk have been handed leaflets by masked men, and told that they need to register themselves, and include a list of their properties as well as a $50 registration fee. Whether it is real or some kind of stunt, Jewish People are still being subjected to anti-Semitism. It is a time for stepped-up prayers. This comes on the heels of the tragic ...

Jews Forced to Register... Where?

April 25, 2014

Amid growing conflict between ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians in the former Soviet republic of Ukraine, long-buried anti-Semitic sentiments have begun to surface. For example, back on April 8th, Nazi symbols were drawn on a Holocaust monument in Odessa, Ukraine. The symbols—swastikas and the SS Wolfsangel sign—were painted on the memorial site. Swastikas also appeared on a wall surrounding a Jewish cemetery along with messages like “Death to the Jews.” Another incident a week later g...

Addis Ababa: Fruit of JVMI Medical Missions

April 24, 2014

The small room cannot contain the music. Nor can hearts contain their worship. It fills every nook of the congregation’s meeting room, surging out into the neighborhood through the open door and small window. Hands. They are raised in praise, folded in prayer, rhythmically clapping, or covering the faces of souls so deeply moved by God they can do nothing else. Bodies. Swaying, moving to the music. Not like we sway, an inch to the right and then to the left. No, this is exuberant swaying, with f...

Country Boy - A Medical Missions Journal

April 22, 2014

Sometimes on our medical missions we are able to hold a clothing distribution center within the outreach clinic. Such was the case in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2013 when one clothing center volunteer met the sobering face of poverty in a young country boy. A Volunteer's Story "1:30 a.m. in Addis Ababa and I can’t get him out of my mind. I see his face: somber, tired, expressionless. So heavy, his burden. It has drained away any happiness from his face, any smile from his lips and light from...

Blood Sacrifices and Nuclear Threats

April 17, 2014

In Israel and around the world, a couple of under-reported news stories with prophetic implications unfolded in recent days. On Monday, April 14th, Jerusalem police arrested five ultra-orthodox Jewish Israelis who were attempting to sacrifice a goat at the Temple Mount to mark the Pesach (Passover) holiday. In the modern era, rabbinical authorities from virtually all streams of Judaism have been in agreement that blood sacrifices such as the one attempted are inappropriate and forbidden. B...

Fear Not - A Medical Mission Story

April 17, 2014

Diane freely admits the last place she wanted to work was the Nurses Station. A Family Nurse Practitioner, she had spent the first three days of the 2013 Addis Ababa medical mission working in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. A bright and faithful woman, she loved serving the desperately poor women of the community. When Thursday came and she was re-assigned to help in the Nurses Station, she quickly overcame disappointment with willing surrender, saying, “Okay,, Lord, wherever You want...
