9 Things to Know About Tisha B’Av

What’s the saddest day on the Jewish calendar? It’s Tisha B’Av, and this year, it begins at sunset on Saturday, July 17 and ends at sundown on July 18. Tisha B’Av is an important Jewish holiday. Here are nine things to know about Tisha B’Av.

1.Tisha B’Av means the ninth of Av. Av is the name of a summer month on the Hebrew calendar, and the ninth day falls either in July or August.

2.Tisha B’Av is the most sorrowful day of the Jewish year because it commemorates a surprising number of tragedies that have happened to the Jewish people on this very same date throughout history. Most importantly, both the first and second Temples were destroyed on the ninth of Av hundreds of years apart.

3.Other tragedies that came upon the Jewish people throughout history on the ninth of Av include:

  • In 135 C.E., the Bar Kochba Revolt was quashed and hundreds of thousands of Jewish people were killed. After the Revolt, the Roman Emperor Hadrian changed Judea’s name to Syria Palestina after Israel’s long-time enemy, the Philistines
  • In 136 C.E., Hadrian leveled what remained of the Temple in Jerusalem, leaving only what we know today as the Temple Mount
  • In 1096 C.E., the first Crusade officially began. Thousands of Jewish people were killed or persecuted during these campaigns attempting to force them to convert to “Christianity”

4. Tisha B’Av is preceded by three weeks of mourning, beginning on the 17th of Tammuz, marking the day that the Romans breached Jerusalem’s walls in 69 C.E. The event led to the Temple’s destruction in 70 A.D. Mourning intensifies on Av 1 through the 9th.

5. We fast from food and water on Tisha B’Av, similarly to the fast on Yom Kippur. Fasting has long been a sign of mourning, and on this day, we intentionally grieve over our many losses as a people throughout history.

6. Another way we mourn is by sitting only on low chairs for a portion of the day. Sitting uncomfortably in awkward chairs keeps our ancestors’ suffering and the day’s grief at the forefront of our minds. We also don’t wear leather on Tisha B’Av because it is considered a comfortable luxury and inappropriate for such a day of sorrow.

7. Because reading and studying the Torah brings joy, tradition prohibits it on Tisha B’Av, except for reading sections that describe mourning laws or times when Israel endured great suffering. Reading the book of Lamentations is traditional during synagogue services on Tisha B’Av.

8. We read kinot (mourning poems) that describe historical events targeting the Jewish people for conquest, annihilation or persecution. They often recount in detail some of the things our ancestors suffered on this date throughout the centuries and reflect the heart of prayers to God for preservation and hope.

9. For Jewish Believers in Jesus, Tisha B’Av also offers an opportunity to pray for our Jewish people, knowing that God has kept His promise to send the Messiah, who is the true hope of Israel. Many of Av 9's catastrophes – done by those who falsely claimed the name of Jesus in their actions – only add to the misconception that there is an impossible divide between Judaism and Jesus. Please join us in praying that the Lord will break through that misunderstanding so that more Jewish people would come to know Him.

Shalom, my friend.

I want you to know how grateful I am for you and for your love and compassion for Israel and the Jewish people. Your partnership is a great encouragement to me, today and every day.

As we look at the significant news from Israel this week – the country has a new prime minister for the first time 12 years – let us take this opportunity to lift Naftali Bennett, the new PM, and the other leaders of Israel up to the Lord. Please join me in praying for God to guide each person, that they would exercise great wisdom and discernment. And also for a spirit of cooperation – that they would work together for what is best for Israel and her people.

As you’ll see, ongoing prayer is needed concerning both Iran and threats from Hamas. Again, thank you for standing with Israel and the Jewish people.

Israel’s new prime minister, Naftali Bennett, is sworn in

Sunday night Israel’s Knesset (parliament) voted to approve the new government formed by Yamina leader Naftali Bennett and Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid. This ended Benjamin Netanyahu’s record-breaking 12-year term as prime minister (PM).

The new government passed with 60 MKs (members of the Knesset) supporting it and 59 opposing it, reported The Jerusalem Post.

Bennett was sworn in as Israel’s 13th prime minister and Lapid as the 14th. Lapid became Israel’s Foreign Minister and Alternate Prime Minister. He is slated to become the PM in 2023 after Bennett serves two years.

Bennett convened the government for its first meeting. In his first speech, the new PM called on all sides to display restraint. Bennett said his government would prevent the nuclearization of Iran and would not allow rocket fire on Israeli citizens from the Gaza Strip. He also praised outgoing PM Netanyahu for his hard work for Israel over the years.

President Biden offers congratulations to Israel’s new prime minister

World leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden, congratulated Naftali Bennett, the new prime minister of Israel, on Sunday night.

“On behalf of the American people, I congratulate Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Alternate Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, and all the members of the new Israeli cabinet,” Biden said in a statement, according to The Times of Israel. “I look forward to working with Prime Minister Bennett to strengthen all aspects of the close and enduring relationship between our two nations.”

Biden said that “Israel has no better friend than the United States. The bond that unites our people is evidence of our shared values and decades of close cooperation and as we continue to strengthen our partnership, the United States remains unwavering in its support for Israel’s security.”

The president added that his administration “is fully committed to working with the new Israeli government to advance security, stability and peace for Israelis, Palestinians and people throughout the broader region.”

Bennett responded on Twitter: “Thank you, Mr. President! I look forward to working with you to strengthen the ties between our two nations.”

Biden and Bennett spoke on the phone later in the evening. The new prime minister thanked Biden for his long-standing commitment to Israel and its security, including during Operation Guardian of the Walls, the most recent escalation between Israel and terror groups in the Gaza Strip, reported The Jerusalem Post.

Tensions Rising Again Between Hamas and Israel

On Tuesday, in defiance of a warning from Hamas, Israel held the postponed Flag March through Jerusalem's Old City. The original march came to an end on May 10 because of rocket fire from Hamas at Jerusalem. That began 11 days of intensive fighting between Israel and terror groups in Gaza.

While Hamas didn't fire rockets at Israel, incendiary balloons launched from Gaza over two days have set 26 fires around the Eshkol region in Southern Israel. According to The Times of Israel, more than 30 acres of land containing orchards and wheat fields were destroyed.

In response, the IDF launched several air strikes on buildings in Gaza belonging to Hamas and other terror groups. These were the first airstrikes of the new government and backed up Prime Minster Bennett's past statements that the IDF would react strongly to arson attacks.

Iran nuclear talks resume with round six

On Saturday, a sixth round of indirect talks between Iran and the U.S. began regarding reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal.

U.S. President Biden has shown a willingness to rejoin the deal under terms that would see the U.S. scale back sanctions and Iran return to limiting its nuclear activity.

The talks involve the remaining parties to the deal – Iran, Russia, China, France, Britain, Germany and the European Union (EU) and are taking place in a hotel in Vienna. The U.S. delegation is in a hotel across the street because Iran has refused face-to-face meetings, according to The Jerusalem Post.

“We are making progress but the negotiations are intense and a number of issues (remain), including on how steps are to be implemented,” an EU spokesman said, adding that the goal was “to find ways to get very close to a final agreement in the coming days.”

U.S. says “hundreds of sanctions will remain in place”

During meetings with U.S. lawmakers on June 8, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke about the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement, The Jerusalem Post reported. 

He said, “we don’t know at this stage whether Iran is willing and able to do what it would need to do to come back into compliance.”

Blinken continued, “I would anticipate that even in the event of a return to compliance with the JCPOA, hundreds of sanctions will remain in place, including sanctions imposed by the Trump administration.”

Great is God’s faithfulness

“Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."
(Lamentations 3:22-23 NIV)

Shalom, my friend.

As the verse above makes clear, our God is full of compassion, and He is the very definition of faithful. In this we take heart.

I believe it’s more important than ever for us to show Jewish people that we stand with them. We’re seeing a wave of anti-Semitism in North America, and there is simply no place for this.

Instead, we must serve as examples to the rest of the watching world. We must show compassion and mercy among those who’ve suffered unspeakable loss and trauma. We must show God’s pursuant love in the bond shared between Jewish people in our country and our brothers and sisters in Israel.

Please take a moment to read the stories below about a new government on the horizon in Israel and the man prepared to take office as its 11th president. Please also read about last month’s fighting in the Gaza Strip and pray about the future. Even as the concerning news transpiring in Israel and the Middle East reaches us, we remain confident in our sovereign God.

ISRAEL’S GOVERNMENT UP FOR VOTE THIS WEEKEND

After four elections in two years and four failed attempts to create a stable government, a new unity government led by  Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid will be brought to a vote of confidence and sworn in during a special session of the Knesset on Sunday, according to The Jerusalem Post.

If the unity government gets the expected 61 votes, it will end Benjamin Netanyahu’s record-breaking 12 years as Prime Minister. Neftali Bennet of Yamina will take over as Prime Minister for two years before giving up the position to Yair Lapid in 2023. 

The unity government consists of eight parties, some of which are normally opponents. Particularly the Yamina party, which traditionally aligns with Netanyahu’s Likud party, backs the new government. Several Yamina representatives were on the fence until the last minute but have now signaled their intention to vote for the unity government.

Missing from the coalition are any ultra-Orthodox or right-wing religious parties. However, Ra’am (United Arab List) signed on as the first Arab party to enter a coalition deal.

In announcing the forming of a new government to President Reuven Rivlin, Yair Lapid said, "I commit to you Mr. President, that this government will work to serve all the citizens of Israel including those who aren't members of it, will respect those who oppose it, and do everything in its power to unite all parts of Israeli society.”

ISRAEL’S NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT RECEIVES MOST VOTES EVER

Last Wednesday, Isaac Herzog, the chairman of the Jewish Agency and former head of the Labor party, was elected as Israel’s eleventh president. He received 87 votes, the most a presidential candidate has ever won.

Herzog won over Miriam Peretz, who received 26 votes. Peretz is a social activist who survived the loss of two of her sons in battle and became an Israel Prize-winning educator.

Herzog is the son of Israel’s sixth president, Chaim Herzog, and the grandson of Israel’s first chief rabbi. Herzog’s term will begin when Reuven Rivlin’s ends on July 9

Israel’s president is largely ceremonial but plays a key role in deciding who gets the mandate to form a government following elections. The president also has the power to pardon people and grant clemency.

 

CONFLICT WITH HAMAS: WAS LAST MONTH’S GAZA BATTLE ONLY THE FIRST?

In May, Israel and Hamas fought an 11-day battle. It began when the terror group launched an intensive attack at Jerusalem. During the fighting, Hamas fired more than 4,300 rockets and mortar shells at Israel, and the Israel Defense Force (IDF) launched some 1,500 strikes on the terror group’s targets in the Gaza Strip.

Many are eager to move forward, to put the fighting in the Strip behind. However, the head of the IDF’s Southern Command said last week that he anticipates more fighting in the future.

According to The Times of Israel, Maj. Gen. Eliezer Toledano sees last month’s conflict as a part of a wider campaign. “The operation ended, or at least its first stage did. The next stage will happen if we see that the security situation has changed,” he said.

He emphasized, “It’s all contingent upon the security situation. If we succeeded with this first stage, that’s great. If we didn’t, we’ll have to continue.”

We are praising the Lord for recent congregational visits that two of our JVMI leaders made to Africa last month, and we want to thank you for your prayers. Logging approximately 27,000 air miles and almost 1,300 on land, our two team members visited 17 congregations and ministered to around 12,000 people. The Lord answered your prayers for their safe travels and good health throughout, and He enabled them to see Him do amazing things as they ministered.

We marvel at the scope of what the Lord is doing in and through the Messianic congregations in Africa. Here are a few prayer points to add to our praises as we keep these groups lifted in prayer:

  • Leadership development among all congregational leaders in the five regions with which we partner
  • Increase in disciples and disciple-making
  • Grace and favor from the Lord for the congregations to be able to shine as generous communities amid the country's political and financial struggles
  • Unity among leadership and creative ideas to reach the Lemba communities with the Good News
  • Pray along these lines for the Lemba believers in South Africa as well

Let’s Pray

Lord, whether they are elders, deacons or leaders in another capacity, we lift in prayer all those in Ethiopia and Zimbabwe who are serving as under-shepherds, following the leadership of the Good Shepherd, Yeshua. We particularly pray for every leader and congregation touched by the recent congregational visits. May the ministry they received and the words spoken over and to them continue to resonate within, bringing transformation and growth by the power of Your Holy Spirit. May You be glorified by their lives and leadership and by each congregation they represent. May we witness the expansion of Your Kingdom in Africa through Messianic leaders and congregations. In Yeshua’s name, Amen.

Hope for tomorrow, beginning today

Shalom, my friend.

As we head into this new month of June, I cannot thank you enough for standing with Israel. Your love of and support for the Jewish people is more critical now than ever. It means so much to me – and to the entire ministry of Jewish Voice – to have your faithful partnership.

Please take heart in the words from John 16 above. Jesus does not guarantee things in this life will go smoothly. But, notice the last portion of the Scripture above: we can take heart; Jesus has overcome! He is the victorious One!

The news from the Middle East and Israel continues to unfold at a breathtaking pace. From the United Nations Human Rights Council’s decision to launch an investigation against Israel to a breakthrough COVID-19 treatment, there is much to be in prayer about.

UNITED NATIONS OPENS WAR CRIMES PROBE, CALLS FOR EMBARGO

For the first time ever, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) created a permanent fact-finding mission regarding a UN member state.

Prompted by the 11-day Israel Defense Forces (IDF)-Hamas war, the UNHRC voted 24-9 last week to launch an investigation against Israel for alleged war crimes. It called for an arms embargo against the country.

An arms embargo is a restriction or a set of sanctions applying to weaponry or sometimes also to dual-use technology. As the UNHRC is a 47-member body, a significant number (14) of these countries abstained from voting. None of the European Union countries supported the measure. The United States is not a member of the UNHRC, engaging only by observation, yet was absent from the proceedings.

The decision to call for such a probe was submitted by the Palestinian Authority and Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The UNHRC already calls annually for an arms embargo against Israel, and the vote adds to that annual text. Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu denounced the decision, calling it "shameful".

According to The Jerusalem Post, the actual resolution does not mention Israel or Hamas. It is instead directed at those who violate international law so that the commission of inquiry could decide to investigate both Israeli and Palestinian sides. But the language in the resolution – as well as the speeches that were given at the UNHRC, plus the fact that it was filed by the Palestinians – makes it clear that the intent was to focus on Israel.

BREAKTHROUGH COVID-19 TREATMENT TO BEGIN ADVANCED TRIAL

The COVID-19 pandemic continues claiming lives around the globe. Hope now gleams on the horizon in the form of a new coronavirus treatment, spoken of highly by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “miracle drug,” that has been approved by the Health Ministry for a Phase II/III trial, according to The Jerusalem Post.

A double-blind placebo trial will involve about 150 patients in moderate or serious condition who will be treated with the medication. Israel is an ideal place for the trial because the level of COVID-19 is extremely low. Prof. Nadir Arber of Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center told The Jerusalem Post that the trial will involve other medical centers throughout Israel, as well as centers in a few other carefully selected countries. For one, Georgia anticipates participating after receiving necessary authorization from the European Medicines Agency.

PRESIDENT BIDEN’S GAZA RECONSTRUCTION PLAN: PIPE DREAM OR POSSIBLE?

The Biden administration is clear about its desire to help rebuild Gaza by sending humanitarian aid, but it faces roadblocks in doing so.

U.S. officials say they want the Palestinian Authority to have a role in directing aid into Gaza so that it will acquire influence and goodwill in Gaza. With the relief and reconstruction process led by the UN and including the Palestinian Authority, Egypt and Israel, another U.S. goal is to establish a strong international monitoring mechanism to ensure the aid will benefit the people of Gaza and not Hamas.

According to Axios, Israeli officials told U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken that while they are ready to help get immediate humanitarian assistance into Gaza — water, food, medical supplies — several conditions will have to be met before they will allow the reconstruction effort to begin. Among others, these include a stronger monitoring system than what was previously in place so that Hamas cannot repurpose building materials for its own purposes. Israeli officials also want the Biden administration to press Egypt to monitor its border crossing with Gaza and prevent the entry of dual-use items that could bolster Hamas' military industry.

Again according to Axios, Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza, claimed that Hamas would not interfere with international reconstruction efforts.

1 MILLION PEOPLE TARGETED TO RECEIVE ASSISTANCE

The recently heightened conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas ruling Gaza prompted the United Nations to appeal for $95 million. The funds would go toward aid and repairs in Gaza, designated to span the next three months to meet immediate humanitarian needs and help repair key facilities.

According to Ynetnews, the region's funds coordinator says the conflict in May left 800,000 people without regular access to water and 58 education facilities, 285 buildings and more than 1,000 housing and commercial units either damaged or destroyed.

The $95 million would go toward immediate needs for food, health care, medicine, medical supplies and quick repairs of some infrastructure. Lynn Hastings, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Gaza, said most of the money would go to Gaza and some to the West Bank and east Jerusalem. Injured people would directly receive cash assistance, mental health counseling and more.

Open the door to share the Good News

I’m so thankful you understand how crucial it is to not only meet the needs of vulnerable Jewish people, but even more important, to share the life-transforming message of the Gospel!

So much has changed in our nation and our world this past year, but one thing has not changed – the Lord’s great love for the Jewish people. I believe this motivates you, like it does me. Our God deeply desires for His people to return to Him and to say yes to His Son, Jesus.

And when we meet basic, critical needs – like dental care, food and more – we open the door to share the Good News!

Though Israel is leading the charge globally in vaccinating its citizens, Israel’s economy is still struggling. They have had multiple nationwide lockdowns to try and control the spread of COVID-19. Businesses and people have great financial needs. Especially when you consider that tourism is one of the country’s major sources of income.

That’s why we must not let up! The most vulnerable populations in Israel desperately need help – and you can provide it. When you give, we’re able to support our more than 80 partner ministries in Israel. Together, we meet many different needs. These include:

  • Providing groceries to those who cannot afford them due to the pandemic
  • Supporting Messianic congregations – including building expenses,
  • Bibles and more
  • Helping Holocaust survivors with dental care
  • Providing Bible studies and mentorship for children
  • Offering counseling to those dealing with drug addiction and homelessness
  • Caring for women and children in crisis

A leader at one of the Messianic congregations Jewish Voice supports in Israel recently shared this encouraging report:

Will the ceasefire hold?

Shalom, my friend. Although the latest news reported from Israel is a ceasefire, this doesn’t stop – or even slow – our need to continue to pray for Israel and her people.

I’m so thankful you share my love and concern for the Jewish people. Not only do we need to continue praying for peace in Israel, but I’m also asking you to pray even more fervently for God’s Chosen People to seek the true and lasting peace that is only found in Jesus the Messiah.

These times of difficulty and fear can move many to look for answers beyond what they currently know and believe! Join with me in praying that many will come to know their Messiah.

And, as always, I hope you will pray as you read through the news stories I’ve included – even with the ceasefire, there are still attacks happening and anti-Semitic activity in Israel and around the world. It’s a dark time – but we know God is ultimately in control!

Urgent Prayer Request!

ISRAELI SOLDIER AND CIVILIAN ATTACKED IN JERUSALEM

On Monday, two men were stabbed in front of the Israel Police National Headquarters. One is an Israeli soldier, the other a civilian. They were treated at the scene and then taken to a nearby hospital. Both in their 20s, one man was in serious condition and the other moderate condition. The assailant was shot and killed by police, who described it as a terrorist attack.

The stabbing attack on the two men happened near the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood where the potential eviction of Palestinians led to mass protests that helped spark the battle between Israel and terrorists in Gaza.

RALLIES IN SUPPORT OF ISRAEL HELD AROUND THE WORLD

Over the weekend, following the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, rallies took place in cities around the world showing solidarity with Israel. The message at the rallies was also one of protest against increasing anti-Semitic activity and attacks on Jewish people that have risen during and after the conflict.

In New York, thousands of Jewish and pro-Israel demonstrators gathered at the site of the World Trade Center. They flew Israeli and American flags and held signs with messages of support. Rallies were also held in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Houston, according to The Jerusalem Post.

“We are here today against terror, united against terrorism. We do not accept any type of terror, not in New York, not in Israel, not anywhere in the world,” said Tal Schuster, one of the New York event’s organizers, The Times of Israel reported.

Hundreds of people gathered in London despite the rain. In Australia, the Jewish community held rallies in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

PRESIDENT BIDEN SPEAKS OUT AGAINST ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACKS

In response to the increase in anti-Semitic attacks on Jewish communities in the U.S. and around the world since fighting between Israel and Hamas began on May 10, U.S. President Joe Biden condemned the violence.

“The recent attacks on the Jewish community are despicable, and they must stop,” Biden wrote on his official Twitter account on Monday. “I condemn this hateful behavior at home and abroad – it’s up to all of us to give hate no safe harbor.”

Biden’s statement comes three days after several prominent U.S. Jewish groups appealed to the White House to take action and speak out against the attacks in cities throughout the United States. Anti-Semitic incidents were also reported in the UK, Scotland, Germany and other countries worldwide, according to The Times of Israel.

IRAN MILITARY COMMANDER VOWS SUPPORT FOR HAMAS AGAINST ISRAEL

Last week, one day before Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire after 11 days of fighting, Esmail Qaani, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Quds Force, sent a letter to the commander of Hamas’s military wing. In the letter to Mohammed Deif, Qaani pledged that Iran would not abandon the Palestinians.

Qaani praised Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza for engaging in a “great battle that once again proved the weakness of the enemy.”

In the letter, he also said, “I kiss the hands that are carrying the weapons of Jihad (holy war) to defend Jerusalem and its holy sites. We will never be satisfied until this entity (Israel) is removed from the blessed land of Palestine and the liberation of every grain of its soil.”

Qaani vowed to fulfill the promise made by his predecessor, General Qasem Soleimani, and keep providing financial and military aid to the terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip. Qaani’s letter was published by the Palestinian news agency SAFA, according to The Jerusalem Post. Soleimani was killed in Baghdad in a U.S. drone strike on January 3, 2020. He funded and armed Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

MAJORITY OF COVID RESTRICTIONS TO BE LIFTED IN ISRAEL

On June 1, Israelis will no longer be required to show proof of vaccination to enter various venues, and capacity limits at stores, restaurants and other sites will be lifted. Restrictions on indoor and outdoor gatherings will also be removed.

A week later, the indoor mask requirement will be lifted, according to The Times of Israel.

Israel’s successful vaccination campaign has made these changes possible.

“Israel is returning to routine,” Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said. “Less than six months ago, we started the vaccination campaign. Thanks to the excellent work of the workers in the health system… we carried out the best vaccination drive in the world. We have long been reaping our reward with low morbidity.”

The rules governing international travel remain the same and could be made stricter to prevent the potential entry of new COVID variants.
