Lord of Israel and the nations!

May 25, 2021

Prayer Points

The Lord declared, in both the Tanach (Old Testament) and the Brit Chadashah (New Testament), that His house was to be a house of prayer “for all nations.” He loves His people Israel and wants the world to know that He is their God. He also extends His love and purposes to Gentiles in the nations. Today we are praying for Israel and the nations, reflecting the heart of God for all peoples to know Him through Yeshua (Jesus). May He use our prayers to accomplish the work He calls us to at this time.

Please pray for:

ISRAEL:

  • Alertness as watchmen – that we continue praying for the peace of Jerusalem and freedom for Israel from all threats, external and internal
  • Believers to be strong and unified in faith and for congregations and ministries in the Land to effectively minister hope and the Good News of salvation through Yeshua
  • Ongoing wisdom for decision-makers, safety for citizens, and the Lord’s perfect plans regarding Israel’s government and leaders, including the presidential election on June 2

ETHIOPIA:

  • Our team during these last few days of the Medical Outreach in the southern region of Ethiopia
  • New Believers and those who are following up with people who were interested in hearing more
  • All involved in the Outreach, for safe travel home and good health

ZIMBABWE:

  • The Jewish people who received Jesus during our recent distribution Outreach in Zimbabwe
  • Each one of the thousands of households who received food or Family LifeStraws®
  • Our team as they prepare for our next Outreach to Zimbabwe in July

AFRICA:

  • Lasting fruit from our recent congregational visits and continuing unity among congregations and their leaders in Ethiopia and Zimbabwe
  • Creative ideas and resources for them to reach others amid COVID-19 and many other economic, societal and national crises
  • Guidance from the Lord as to any new areas He might be leading us to in Africa

LET’S PRAY:

Lord, You truly are moving in Israel and among the nations! Stir our faith and fuel our prayers as we spend time in Your presence and stand on Your Word. May You hear these prayers and enable us to proclaim the Gospel to Jewish people and their neighbors, to see Messianic congregations and ministries flourish, and to engage the Church in participating with You in Your heart and plans for Israel and the Jewish people. In Yeshua’s name, AMEN.

Keep Praying for Israel

May 21, 2021

“May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.”
Psalm 20:1 (NIV)

Shalom, my friend. I am so thankful for your partnership and for your love and concern for Israel and the Jewish people.

Again, I come to you asking for prayers as I share news from this past week. We know our Lord hears and answers when we pray, so please join me in lifting up Israel and her people.

It has been another tragic few days.

Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, took place early this week, but across Israel and for Jewish people everywhere, celebrations of the holiday were overshadowed by the continued fighting. As terror groups in Gaza fire more rockets on cities in Israel, the Jewish State must respond and defend itself.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have spoken multiple times over the past several days. Biden has reaffirmed his strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself against rocket attacks from terror groups Hamas and the Islamic Jihad. He condemned these indiscriminate attacks against Israel.

Thank you for also standing with Israel, especially during such a difficult time. Here are the news stories for you to read and pray over.

FIGHTING CONTINUES INTO SECOND WEEK BETWEEN HAMAS AND ISRAEL

Fighting began on May 10, when terror group Hamas fired long-range rockets at Jerusalem after clashes between Palestinian protestors and Israeli police.
Since that day, Palestinian militants in Gaza have fired more than 3,200 rockets into Israel. In response, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have launched hundreds of airstrikes targeting Hamas’ militant infrastructure. IDF officials said Hamas stockpiled about 15,000 rockets before the fighting began.

On Monday, the IDF said it struck 35 “terror targets” and the tunnels. Also called the “Metro,” these tunnels are used by Palestinian fighters to take cover from airstrikes. In addition, the IDF said it hit nine houses belonging to “high-ranking commanders” in Hamas.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad say at least 20 of their fighters have been killed. Israel says the number is at least 130 and released names and photos of more than two dozen militant commanders it says were “eliminated.”

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States would support any initiative to stop the fighting but also indicated the U.S. did not intend to put pressure on the two sides to accept a ceasefire, saying “it is up to the parties to make clear they want to pursue a ceasefire.”

In a call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, German Chancellor Angela Merkel emphasized her country’s solidarity with Israel. She condemned the continued rocket attacks from Gaza and said she hopes for a swift end to the fighting, her office reported.

Isamail Haniyeh, Hamas’ top leader, who is based abroad, said the group has heard from the United Nations, Russia, Egypt and Qatar regarding ceasefire efforts but “will not accept a solution that is not up to the sacrifices of the Palestinian people,” according to AP News.

U.S. BLOCKS THIRD UN SECURITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION ON GAZA

For the third time in a week, the U.S. blocked a UN Security Council joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The draft statement made no specific mention of Hamas rocket fire in Gaza.

During a Security Council meeting on Sunday, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the U.S. was “working tirelessly through diplomatic channels to try and bring an end to this conflict.”

Meanwhile, the current president of the UN General Assembly (GA) planned to convene the GA on Thursday to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza, according to The Times of Israel.

IDF PUBLISHES DOCUMENTATION TO PROVE IT MAKES EVERY EFFORT TO AVOID CIVILIAN CASUALTIES IN GAZA

After facing repeated international criticism and allegations of indiscriminately striking targets in the Gaza Strip, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) published operational documentation showing that they do everything in their power to avoid hurting civilians.

Video and audio recordings of Israeli Air Force pilots show the pilots calling off an airstrike after noticing civilians, including children, in the area, The Jerusalem Post reported.

In addition, the IDF is known for inventing a tactic that uses different methods to warn populated areas in advance of a planned airstrike to give civilians the opportunity to evacuate the area.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Netanyahu accused terror group Hamas of committing a double war crime. “They’re targeting our civilians and hiding behind Palestinian civilians, effectively using them as human shields.”

In a conversation with U.S. President Biden over the weekend, Netanyahu stressed that “Israel is doing everything to avoid harming persons who are uninvolved.”

U.S. SENATE SPEAKS OUT AGAINST IRAN, RECENT HAMAS ATTACKS ON ISRAEL

Last week, 43 republican senators called on President Biden to deny sanction relief and end negotiations with Iran, citing the country’s ties with Hamas, The Jerusalem Post reported.

“Palestinian terrorists in Gaza, who are funded by Iran, have launched a series of rocket attacks into Israel,” the letter reads. “They are targeting Israeli civilians and cities, including Israel’s capital Jerusalem. This is troubling as members of your administration are currently in Vienna negotiating with Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.”

The senators wrote that “In light of these recent attacks by Hamas against Israel, the United States should take all steps necessary to hold Tehran accountable and under no circumstances, provide sanctions relief to Iran. This is especially important as Iran is supporting terrorist activity against the United States’ closest ally in the region, Israel.”

The statement also said “The United States must not do anything to enrich Israel’s enemies, such as by offering sanctions relief to a regime that seeks to destroy Israel. As a longtime partner of the Jewish state, we also urge you to unequivocally support Israel’s right to defend itself against any and all terrorist attacks.”

U.S. HOUSE ALSO ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING ROCKET ATTACKS AGAINST ISRAEL

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) issued a statement following Hamas rocket attacks:

“The events of the past few days have demonstrated, once again, the danger Israelis face every day and the reason peace is so necessary. No provocation in Jerusalem justifies raining down rockets on a civilian population, and no nation can be expected to sit idly while rockets are fired into its borders and its civilians are targeted. Israel has every right to defend itself and take necessary action to stop the attacks from Gaza.”

Hoyer continued, “America stands by our ally Israel because we understand what the Jewish state represents: the striving of a people long denied freedom and self-determination to build a future in their ancient homeland based on democracy, justice, and peace. Our relationship continues to be based in common ideals and common purpose.”

He also said, “the unjustifiable attacks by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad continue to jeopardize Israeli and Palestinian lives and hinder efforts for peace on all sides. Peace cannot be achieved while terrorist groups continue to undermine the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people.”

PALESTINIAN ISLAMIC JIHAD OFFICIAL CLAIMS WEAPONS, MONEY AND FOOD PROVIDED BY IRAN

During an interview that aired on Iraq’s Al-Ahd TV on May 7, Palestinian Islamic Jihad Official Ramez Al-Halabi spoke of Iran saying, “They are the ones who support us with weapons, money and food.”

He also said, “The Kornet missiles that we use to blow up the Israeli tanks – the pride of the Israeli and global defense industry – are the Kornet missiles of Qasem Soleimani and Iran. The guns that we use to shoot at the Israeli enemy... Those who use these guns were trained by our brothers in the IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps]. We say this loud and clear.”

Soleimani was an Iranian IRGC military commander who was killed by U.S. drones in Iraq in 2020.

This interview was reported on by MEMRI (Middle East Media Research Institute), headquartered in Washington, D.C.

LET US PRAY TOGETHER

Please pray with me for:

  • Peace to prevail throughout Israel
  • Protection for civilians during the fighting
  • Continued support for Israel from the U.S., Germany and other countries
  • God’s provision and direction concerning the nuclear deal negotiations between the U.S. and Iran
  • A peaceful God-inspired solution for Israel’s government following the country’s fourth inconclusive election in the past two years
  • Jewish people to recognize Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah

Nothing Could Keep Her Away

May 21, 2021

appeal

It was the notorious winter snowstorm of 2021, and unbeknown to Jewish Voice Outreach Partner Danita (not pictured here), it was barreling in on her rural town in southern Illinois. Typically a last-minute packer, Danita had surprised herself by having her suitcases filled and ready to go nearly a week before she needed to leave for the Fiche, Ethiopia, Outreach in February. That came in handy a few days before her trip when she needed to travel to a nearby town for her required COVID-19 test.

The snow began around 9:00 p.m., and Danita soon learned it was no mild storm like her region is used to. Forecasts warned of snow lasting through the next day with several inches of accumulation and a second storm to follow. “Leave now,” Danita heard in her spirit. She was ready.

As she drove through the blizzard, she prayed, “Lord, You parted the Red Sea. Please part the snow so I can see the yellow lines on the highway.”

It took Danita two hours to make the normally one-hour drive. She got a hotel room and, the next day, had her COVID test. The weather was so bad that she knew she couldn’t go home for the few days before her flight to Washington, D.C., where she was to join the rest of the Outreach team. She had to stay put.

After three days at the hotel, she still hadn’t received her COVID test results. On flight day, she went to the airport on faith. “Lord,” she prayed, “I know that you didn’t set me up for this trip only to have me not go. You’ve got this.”

At the airport, she checked her flight on the big screen. Staring back at her was the word “CANCELED.” She tried to get another flight – on any airline – but everything, including waiting lists, was overbooked.

Undeterred, Danita inquired about the driving time to D.C. – about 11 hours. “I can do this,” she told herself. “I can make it in time to fly to Ethiopia with everyone else.” So, she waited in a long line and rented a car. Wanting to keep JVMI informed of her situation, she contacted Celeste, the Global Outreach (GO) department’s Outreach Engagement Manager, who sprang into action even as she headed to the airport herself. Celeste and GO’s Executive assistant, Angela, found Danita a flight from Atlanta to D.C., cutting her drive time in half. She arrived at the Washington hotel at midnight.

But the enemy wasn’t through pestering Danita. The digital proof of her negative COVID test finally came through, but it wasn’t sufficient to board the international flight. Danita scrambled again, and the testing center provided acceptable documentation just in time. Finally, this woman, whose heart had been committed to this kind of work since she was 13 years old, was free to get on the plane for Ethiopia.

They landed safely in Addis Ababa, but Danita’s luggage didn’t. Thankfully, she had packed a few clothes in her carry-on and was able to supplement her minimal wardrobe with a few in-town purchases and by doing laundry every couple of days at the hotel.  By the time her luggage finally arrived, the Outreach was nearly over.

Through it all, Danita exhibited a remarkable spirit. Veteran Outreach Partners noticed her positive attitude and told her how encouraging that was to them. Danita said everything the enemy threw at her only made her more determined not to let him win. “When he causes that much trouble,” she said, “I know God must be up to something big.” And He was.

Mid-week during the Outreach, the team enjoyed a barbeque and campfire on the hotel grounds. Danita warmed herself by the fire, and when she turned around to warm her back, an Ethiopian man in the circle of chairs patted the seat next to him and said, “Come, sit.” Not entirely comfortable with the invitation, Danita didn’t respond but turned again toward the fire. After a second invitation, though, she thought to pray, “Lord, are You wanting me to talk with this man?” When the gentleman beckoned her to sit down again, she did. And the first thing he said to her was, “I’m Beta Israel.”

Danita lit up. “Oh! Your people are who we’re here to help!” Then she told him, “Did you know that God sent His promised Messiah? He has come, and His name is Yeshua [Jesus]. He fulfilled over 300 prophecies in the Torah and Prophets.”

The man listened, bewildered. “The wonderful news,” Danita continued, “is that He didn’t come to die only for the Jewish people. He died for me too, and He lives in my heart.”

Despite some language barrier, they enjoyed lighthearted conversation and even shared a few chuckles as they ate among the others.

Throughout the remainder of the trip, Danita ran into the man each day at the hotel. “Do you know who that is?” Global Outreach Director Eric Pires asked Danita one day. She explained how they’d met and that she shared the Gospel with him at the barbeque. Eric revealed that the man is the hotel owner and a prominent figure in the community – a rarity given that most Jewish people are not respected and even persecuted in that region.

“You have done what none of us could,” Eric told Danita. “He was drawn to you because he wanted to know more. And God knew you would tell him.” God used a sweetly enthusiastic woman to reach an influential businessman with whom our team had little contact because almost all of our interactions were with his son, the manager.

On the last day, Danita spoke boldly to her new friend. “Do you remember what I said about Jesus being the Messiah who fulfilled all those prophecies in the Scriptures?” He remembered. “I want to challenge you. Get a New Testament. Read it and try to prove me wrong.” The man smiled.

Theo Steinhauer, GO Spiritual Affairs Manager, gave him a complete Bible in Amharic, Ethiopia’s national language. Interestingly, Theo played another role in this man’s life. Many weeks before, Theo was in Ethiopia arranging the Outreach and prayed at length for this man and his home.

Theo was part of God preparing the soil of this man’s heart, and Danita planted the Gospel seed. Who will water it? Who will reap the harvest of seeing this Beta Israel Jewish man open his heart to Jesus? It may very well be members of the Ethiopian Messianic congregation who are continuing the ministry in Fiche. They are visiting people who wanted to learn more, meeting with new Believers and building relationships in the community.

That’s why Jewish Voice is committed to long-term ministry in the areas we visit. We love meeting whatever physical needs we can, but salvation – found only in Messiah Jesus – is a matter of eternity. Our Congregational Leadership and Development department supports, disciples and trains indigenous leaders to minister to their own people and spread the Gospel farther and wider in their communities than we ever could.

When we pray for an upcoming Outreach, we always ask that God would bring us opportunities with prominent, influential leaders in the Jewish and broader communities. God had scheduled a divine appointment for Danita to meet such a man in Fiche. And He strengthened her to get through one hardship after another to be there for it.

Update: Danita, undeterred by the schemes of the enemy, joined us for our following Outreach in Ethiopia. She determined to bring glory to the Lord with what the enemy meant for evil. — Eric

“Israel Needs Your Prayers”

May 14, 2021

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth change.”
(Psalm 46:2-3 TLV)

Shalom, my friend. I am writing to you with a heavy heart to ask for your prayers for Israel and her people. This week we’ve seen the largest clash between Palestinian terror groups in Gaza and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) since 2014.

Terror groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad have fired more than 1,700 rockets and mortars at major Israeli cities and Israel has responded with more than 700 airstrikes on terrorist targets. As I’m writing this, Israel is weighing a possible ground invasion of Gaza.

To make matters worse, unexpected riots and clashes between Arab Israelis and Jewish Israelis have broken out in multiple cities across Israel. Shockingly, several synagogues have been burned, and people on both sides have been gravely injured with at least one death.

Please join me in fervent prayer for Israel and the Jewish people. Pray supernatural peace for Israelis who have been under continual fire for four days and may have to endure more. Pray safety for the IDF personnel as they battle terrorist forces and wisdom of Israel’s military leaders to know the right course of action. Pray for an end to the violence both between Israel and Gaza, and reconciliation between Arab and Jewish Israelis. Finally, let’s pray that these times of trouble would lead the Jewish people to recognize Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah.

HAMAS ATTACKS WITH 1,700 ROCKETS; ISRAEL RESPONDS

Starting with clashes between Israeli police and Muslim protesters in Jerusalem over the weekend, the violence escalated on Monday, during what should have been a time of celebration for Jerusalem Day, which commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem after the Six-Day War in 1967. Terror group Hamas began firing rockets from Gaza into southern Israel - even firing rockets at the Holy City!

Over several days, Hamas has fired more than 1,700 rockets and mortars, often hundreds at a time in an effort to overwhelm Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. Iron Dome monitors all incoming projectiles on radar, determines which ones will hit populated areas and fires interceptor missiles to shoot down the largest threats. According to the IDF, it has a 90-percent success rate.

On Wednesday, for example, more than 500 rockets were fired at Tel Aviv within a few hours. While Iron Dome intercepted many of the rockets headed for civilian areas, one person was killed and at least eight were injured. Flights at Ben Gurion airport were suspended for two hours and schools were closed.

While Israeli casualties are a fraction of what they would be without Iron Dome, more than 6 people have died ranging from an 83-year-old Holocaust survivor to a 5-year-old boy killed by rocket shrapnel. Dozens have been injured. A brief malfunction of the Iron Dome on Tuesday allowed several rockets to slip past and hit Ashkelon and might have led to the two deaths that occurred in the attack.

In response to this massive attack, the IDF has conducted more than 600 airstrikes against terrorist targets in Gaza. On Thursday, IDF tanks and artillery made over 150 additional strikes in a short amount of time. These strikes have taken out rocket launchers, weapons caches, homes of Hamas leaders, Hamas’ intelligence headquarters, attack tunnels and more. In addition, Israel has killed 15 high-ranking Hamas leaders and operatives.

The Hamas Health Ministry says 85 Gazans have been killed so far and more than 500 wounded in the attacks. However, according to the IDF, many of those casualties are caused by Hamas rockets. More than 200 rockets launched toward Israel have fallen short and landed in Gaza.

Hamas also deliberately operates within a densely populated area, using the residents of the Strip as human shields, but Israel still does its best to avoid civilian casualties. The IDF has destroyed several residential apartment buildings that contain offices of terror leaders or weapons stockpiles. Before each strike, the IDF calls and texts building residents, or drops leaflets, telling them to evacuate. They also hit the building’s roof with a small missile that causes little damage as a warning to evacuate before the main attack.

Right now, the IDF has cancelled leave for IDF ground troops and is calling up 9,000 reservists. They have also moved tanks toward the Gazan border, which could mean a ground attack is in the works. This would be the first major ground action in Gaza since 2014.

UNEXPECTED CONFLICT IN ISRAEL

On Tuesday, the Jewish-Arab city of Lod was rocked by unexpected violence as a large group of Arab-Israelis rioted. Three synagogues were burned, along with numerous stores and cars, and several people were injured.

Lod resident Shiloh Fried told Channel 12: “Gangs of Arab youths are going street to street, burning stores, smashing windows… Jewish families are huddled at home, terrified of going out… Their cars are being set alight outside… Police are nowhere to be seen.”

Lod Mayor Yair Revivo asked the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to declare a state of emergency. He called for the military to be deployed in the city, saying “this is too big for police.”

Netanyahu responded by calling a state of emergency, which allowed a curfew to be established and the military to enter the city to support the police. However, the violence has not subsided.

In the days since, groups of Arab and Jewish Israelis have clashed in Lod and other cities, including Ramale, Acre and Jaffa. This is now considered the largest internal conflict in Israel for the last 20 years.

IRAN RELEASES CHILLING FAKE PROPAGANDA VIDEO DEPICTING A MISSILE BLOWING UP THE U.S. CAPITOL

It is no secret that Hamas is one of many terror groups backed by Iran. In fact, Hamas admits that Iran provides many of its weapons.

Last week, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) broadcast a disturbing propaganda video which shows the U.S. Capitol being blown up by a missile and its soldiers marching on Jerusalem. The video ran on Iranian state-run television before a speech to the nation by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The clip aired as reports are surfacing that the U.S. and Iran are getting closer to agreement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal.

Should the U.S. return to the deal, it would be the largest and most controversial foreign policy initiative of President Joe Biden’s administration so far, according to British newspaper, Daily Mail.

LET US PRAY TOGETHER

Please pray with me for:

  • Peace to prevail throughout Israel
  • God’s provision and direction concerning the JCPOA nuclear deal negotiations between the U.S. and Iran
  • A peaceful God-inspired solution for Israel’s government following the country’s fourth inconclusive election in the past two years
  • Israel to be able to continue helping other countries dealing with coronavirus crises
  • Jewish people to recognize Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah

Jerusalem Day Prayer for Israel

May 09, 2021
Day of prayer

Jerusalem Day marks the anniversary of a united Jerusalem coming back into Israeli hands at the end of the Six Day War in June 1967. It is a fitting day to follow Scripture’s instruction and pray for the peace of Jerusalem and lift up prayers for Israel. But first, you may want to know a little background about Jerusalem Day.

How Jerusalem Day came to be

Before the Six Day War, Jerusalem was divided between Israel and Jordan.  In 1966, Egypt and Syria formed a defense pact against Israel, and as a result, Israel’s enemies were emboldened to conduct 63 attacks in the first four months of 1967. From the elevated position of the Golan Heights, Syria often attacked Israeli farmers and kibbutzim (Israeli settlements) in the valley below.

Russia then riled Egypt with lies that Israel was preparing to attack and wipe out Damascus, the Syrian capital. So, Egypt, being Syria’s ally and hating Israel themselves, amassed troops at Israel’s borders. Other Arab nations joined the intimidation by staging hundreds of thousands of soldiers at Israel’s borders. Jordan, who ruled half of Jerusalem, signed a mutual defense pact with Egypt.

Though Israel sent messages of peace, the surrounding Arab nations would not stand down. Inflammatory rhetoric flew over Arab radio waves as tensions and skirmishes escalated. Israel’s Arab neighbors vastly outnumbered her in terms of troops and weaponry. It wouldn’t be an evenly matched fight if the still-young nation-state let them get the upper hand. Fearing the loss of thousands of Israeli lives, Israel pre-emptively struck and disabled much of the Egyptian Air Force. War was official.

Reuniting Jerusalem

Israel pled with Jordan to stay out of it, but Jordan attacked Israeli Jerusalem instead, hoping to gain complete control of the ancient city. After six days of fierce fighting, the opposite proved true. Israel gained control over all of Jerusalem as well as the critical Golan Heights. After more than 2,000 years, Israel’s capital was once again intact and in her hands.

When you hear news reports referencing the demand for “pre-1967 borders” for Israel, this is what it means. Israel would be expected to relinquish half of her capital and holiest city, Jerusalem. She would also have to turn over the Golan Heights, leaving Israeli lives in the valley below in danger of the same kind of Arab attacks that were so frequent before the Six Day War.

Prayer for Israel on Jerusalem Day

Jerusalem Day is a day of celebration and a beautiful time for focused prayer for Israel. Yom Yerushalayim, as it’s called in Hebrew, begins this year at sunset on May 9 and ends the evening of May 10. Join us in this biblical prayer for Israel, based on the Scriptures:

Lord, You have engraved Jerusalem on the palms of Your hands. You love her, and her city walls are ever before you. (Isaiah 49:16). Jesus wept over her reluctance to recognize Him as the Messiah they had waited for (Luke 13:34). Israel is precious in Your sight (Isaiah 43:4a).

I pray for Jerusalem, for all Israel and her citizens, to be at peace – with one another and their Arab neighbors (Psalm 122:6). May peace be within and at all her borders (Psalm 122:7). May there be shalom in the houses of government (Psalm 122:7).

For Your sake, O Lord, I will seek the good of Jerusalem, of Israel (Psalm 122:9). For the sake of my brothers and friends there, I ask, Lord, that You fill her streets and businesses and neighborhoods with Your shalom (Psalm 122:8).

Lord, I know that Your perfect peace only comes through believing in Your Sent One, Yeshua the Messiah (John 14:27). Blessing Israel in earthly ways doesn’t compare to eternal peace with You, for which we need to trust in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:12). So, I pray that You would open the eyes and hearts of Jewish people (Romans 11:25) – whether in Israel or abroad – to see that Yeshua is the One whom the prophets foretold (Isaiah 53, Luke 23:26-27). Lord, save all Israel (Romans 11:26), and may You be glorified through your people, Israel (Isaiah 49:3).

"Our dancing has turned into mourning"

May 07, 2021

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and
saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Shalom, my friend. After the national tragedy that occurred in Israel last week, I am especially thankful to be able to write to you and ask for your prayers on behalf of the Jewish people, especially the Haredi Jews who are suffering this great loss the most. I know this grieves your heart, too.

Last Thursday, 45 ultra-Orthodox Jews were killed in a stampede at Mount Meron and more than 150 were injured. During what was supposed to be a celebration marking the end of a traditional mourning period, mourning began again.

Please pray for all of the families of those who died – some even from the U.S. and other countries beyond Israel.

As you do, please also pray over the other issues in the news stories I’m sharing here – including ongoing negotiations of the nuclear deal with Iran and the U.S. and Israel working together more closely.

ISRAEL HOLDS DAY OF MOURNING FOR VICTIMS OF MOUNT MERON TRAGEDY

After thousands of Haredi Jews died when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the ultra-Orthodox community especially hard, now nearly 50 more were killed in the stampede at Mount Meron late last week and more than 150 were injured, many in critical condition, according to The Times of Israel.

On Sunday, Israel held a national day of mourning in honor of those killed at Mount Meron in the country’s deadliest-ever civil disaster. The dead included more than a dozen children and teenagers.

The headline on the front page of Yated Ne’eman, a Haredi newspaper, the morning after the tragedy read, “The joy of our heart has ceased, our dancing has turned into mourning.”  It is a verse from Lamentations, the biblical book read on Tisha b’Av (a day of mourning for the many tragic events that happened on the Jewish calendar’s 9th of Av), the saddest day on the Jewish religious calendar.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the day of mourning after visiting Mount Meron last Friday, the day after the tragedy. The site is the second-most visited religious site in Israel after the Western Wall.

“There were heartbreaking scenes here. People who were crushed to death, including children,” Netanyahu said, The Times of Israel reported.

More than 100,000 people were taking part in the night of music, dancing and bonfires for the annual Lag B’Omer gathering (Lag B’Omer is a Jewish celebration that takes place on the 33rd day of the Omer (the 49-day period between Passover and Shavuot)).

The celebration quickly became a tragedy when a large crowd began to leave. As people entered into the narrow, sloping walkway to exit, some slipped on the metal floor and others fell on them. As the congestion increased, more people were crushed.

What should have been a festive night marking the end of a religious period of mourning turned into yet another tragedy, especially for Haredi Jews.

ISRAEL’S NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY DIRECTOR TALKS WITH BIDEN IN UNPLANNED MEETING

Last week, while a delegation of senior Israeli officials was in Washington, D.C. to meet with U.S. officials about the Iran nuclear issue, an important unplanned meeting took place.

Yossi Cohen, the director of Mossad, Israel’s national intelligence agency, met with U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday.

It is reported that Biden dropped by a meeting taking place between Cohen and U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan where the pair were discussing regional security issues.

The Jerusalem Post reported that the meeting between Biden and Cohen lasted a full hour and that CIA Director William Burns also joined the meeting in which the three discussed Iran in depth.

NEW REPORT: BIDEN SAID U.S. NOT CLOSE TO RETURN TO DEAL WITH IRAN

A news report on Sunday said that Cohen told Biden it would be a mistake for the U.S. to return to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal with Iran. It’s reported that Biden said the U.S. had a long way to go before it agrees to a return to full compliance with the JCPOA. The Times of Israel said the news report cited an unnamed senior Israeli official who had been briefed on the Friday meeting.

The White House would not comment on the report.

Israel wants to convince the Biden administration to negotiate for an improved deal that would prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons rather than rejoin the JCPOA.

U.S. CONSIDERS ROLLBACK OF SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON IRAN

The U.S. State Department said the Biden administration is committed to coordination and transparency with Israel in its dealings with Iran regarding nuclear issues.

Yet it’s being reported that the administration is considering a rollback of some of the sanctions imposed on Iran during the Trump administration, with the goal of getting Iran to return to compliance with the JCPOA deal. This is according to both current and former U.S. officials familiar with the matter, The Times of Israel reported.

Indirect talks continue in Vienna because Iran has refused to have face-to-face meetings with the U.S. American officials are not saying which sanctions are being considered but have talked about being open to lifting non-nuclear sanctions.

Meanwhile, Iran is demanding that all sanctions be removed. Iran’s leadership says it won’t agree to stop its nuclear activities that are in violation of the JCPOA unless the U.S. lifts at least some of the sanctions.

It’s expected that a rollback of sanctions will be strongly opposed by Israel and Gulf states such as United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

AMERICAN CONGRESS PREPARES TO ACT WITH RESOLUTION

If the Biden administration makes concessions beyond nuclear-specific sanctions, there will be a response from members of the U.S. Congress. There is wide bipartisan support for resolutions encouraging the president’s administration to take a tougher stance on Iran.

One resolution, with more than 220 Democratic and Republican co-sponsors, was introduced last Wednesday. This resolution calls for the administration to recognize “the rights of the Iranian people and their struggle to establish a democratic, secular and non-nuclear Republic of Iran while holding the ruling regime accountable for its destructive behavior.”

U.S. AND ISRAEL FORM WORKING GROUP FOCUSED ON THREAT FROM IRAN’S DRONES AND MISSILES

Last Tuesday, the White House said the U.S. and Israel are establishing an inter-agency working group “to focus particular attention on the growing threat of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Precision-Guided Missiles produced by Iran and provided to its proxies in the Middle East region.”

The announcement came after meetings at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. between delegations from the U.S. and Israel, according to The Jerusalem Post.

“The U.S. and Israeli officials discussed their serious concerns about advancements in Iran’s nuclear program in recent years,” the White House statement read.

During these meetings, the U.S. also updated Israel on the JCPOA talks in Vienna and assured Israel of “President Biden’s unwavering support for Israel’s right to defend itself,” according to the statement.

“The United States remains unyielding in its commitment to Israel’s security, and will work to strengthen all aspects of the U.S.-Israel partnership,” it also read.

U.S SHIP FIRES WARNING SHOTS WHEN IRANIAN VESSELS GET TOO CLOSE

On April 26, U.S. Navy officials said two American ships were swarmed by three small vessels commonly used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in international waters in the Persian Gulf. A similar incident occurred on April 2.

U.S. officials said the three Iranian boats were armed and came within 70 yards of the American ships, a U.S. Navy patrol ship and a U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Both U.S. ships issued multiple warnings via radio and loudspeaker. When the Iranian boats continued to come closer, the Navy ship fired warning shots and the Iranian boats moved away.

LET US PRAY TOGETHER

Please pray with me for:

  • Comfort for the grieving and brokenhearted in the wake of the Mount Meron tragedy
  • God’s provision and direction concerning the JCPOA nuclear deal negotiations
  • Strong relationships to be built between U.S. and Israeli leaders
  • A peaceful God-inspired solution for Israel’s government following the country’s fourth inconclusive election in the past two years
  • Protection for the people of Israel from variants of COVID-19 – two of which have now been documented in Israel
  • Jewish people to recognize Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah

National Day of Prayer 2021 – Praying for the Jewish People of America

May 06, 2021
Pray

The National Day of Prayer in the United States was established to mobilize unified public prayer for America. Its focus is generally, and rightly, for government and leaders, the Body of Believers, current key issues, and other significant spheres of influence in our country. We at Jewish Voice will pray for all these things on the 2021 National Day of Prayer on May 6. But we’ll also add a fresh direction based on the lens of ministry purpose that we look through.

On this National Day of Prayer, we will also be praying for another vital element for our nation – one that is dear to God’s heart – our fellow Jewish citizens and neighbors.

As you pray for our country, would you join us in praying for the Jewish people in the United States of America drawing on the three elements of the Jewish Voice mission statement as inspiration for your intercession? Let’s pray!

Proclaiming the Gospel to the Jew First

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” — Romans 1:16 NIV

Lord, may proclaiming the Gospel to the Jewish people of America, according to Romans 1:16, be a priority among Believers.

  • Lord, please break off any reluctance, fear, or even shame of the Gospel that would prevent us from sharing the Good News of Yeshua (Jesus) with Jewish people
  • Help Believers throughout the nation develop relationships and friendships with Jewish people that will lead to discussions about Jesus, life and death, knowing God, and salvation.
  • Bless and expand the effective influence of ministries and congregations who earnestly seek to clearly and humbly share the Good News with Jewish people
  • Prepare Jewish hearts to receive the Word as it is shared and proclaimed

Growing the Messianic Jewish Community

“So those who received his message were immersed, and that day about three thousand souls were added. They were devoting themselves to the teaching of the emissaries and to fellowship, to breaking bread and to prayers.” — Acts 2:41–42

Lord, please cause the Messianic Jewish community throughout the United States to grow as in Acts 2:41-42.

  • Please bring fresh vision, resources and anointed leadership to Messianic Believers, congregations and ministries throughout our nation
  • Strengthen these individuals and groups with solid teaching, engaging fellowship, and abundant life in the Messiah
  • Give them a heart as well as strategies to reach others – far and near, Jew and Gentile – with the Gospel
  • Lord, bind together this movement in unity and love as never before – with one another and also with others in the Body

Engaging the Church Regarding Israel and the Jewish People

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem — 'May those who love you be at peace!’” — Psalm 122:6

Father, please engage the Church in America concerning Israel and the Jewish people, as Psalm 122:6 exhorts.

  • Lord, please give key leaders, churches and movements in the United States revelation of Your heart, plans and purposes for Israel and the Jewish people, and help them influence others with this understanding
  • Dismantle the stronghold of Replacement Theology, and even anti-Semitism, still present in some parts of the Body – and in their place, sow truth and love regarding the Jewish people
  • Cause Gentile Believers to grasp a greater understanding of their purpose and role in Your kingdom even as they grow in revelation of Your plans for Israel and the Jewish people
  • Give each Believer in America a way to activate these revelations and engage in blessing the Jewish people and Israel

Praying right now for our nation

Lord, You say that You will bless those who bless Israel, the descendants of Abraham. May the United States of America be a strong ally for Israel with a tenacity, conviction and fervor that comes from You. And may the Church in America come to greater fullness in her understanding and commitment to see the Jewish people in our neighborhoods, cities and states saved through faith in Messiah Jesus. Help each of us to do our part to bring glory to You through blessing Israel and the Jewish people – because they are chosen by You and beloved. In Yeshua’s name, Amen.

We hope you’ll join us in praying through these prayer items on May 6, the 2021 National Day of Prayer and beyond.
