Russia in the Middle East Conflict

Russia in the  Middle East Conflict

Israel’s leaders welcomed the New Year this week with a wary eye on events unfolding on that tiny nation’s northeast border with Syria—as another wave of Russian military hardware, manpower, and firepower arrived in Syria. The move leaves Israel and nations worldwide wondering how Russia's presence in Syria will effect to the Middle East conflict.

Two weeks ago I alerted readers to a major, ongoing Russian military build up in Syria designed to prop up the tottering regime of Bashar al-Assad. Syria has long been a primary Russian “client state” in the region going back to the early days of the dictatorial rule of Bashar’s father, Hafez.

The Middle East conflict is complex with many simultaneous struggles. The current Syrian regime is fighting a variety of competing armies attempting to overthrow it—including ISIS; forces affiliated with Al Qaeda; and militias backed by the U.S. and Europe. Assad has lost control of large portions of Syria to these various armies and the resulting chaos is fueling the refugee crisis that has grabbed world attention.

According to a report in The Times of Israel:

“Moscow has deployed tanks at an airfield near the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, US officials told Reuters Monday, at what the Pentagon described as a Russian ‘forward air operating base.’ According to officials who spoke to Reuters, at least two military cargo planes have flown to the airfield each day for the past week.” There are also reports that 200 Russian Marines have been deployed at that Russian airbase as well.

Meanwhile, for the second time in as many months, Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps commander, Qassem Soleimani, flew to Moscow to meet with Russian officials. It is believed that these visits represent increased cooperation between Moscow and Tehran in order to help bolster their mutual ally, Assad, in Syria.
