Israel Turns 70

May 14, 2018

The nation no one thought would last celebrates her 70th anniversary On May 14, 1948, the fledgling nation of Israel declared her independence. The United Nations granted the Jewish people a national homeland in the Palestinian region of the Middle East. Israel was encompassed by Arab neighbors determined to see her fall, and governments around the world wondered how the tiny nation-state would fare. Immediately, surrounding Arab countries attacked, confident they’d quickly overpower Israe...

You may never have heard of Yisrael Kristal. He died last August. But before his death at age 113, he was officially recognized as the world’s oldest living man. But even more important to Mr. Kristal and his family – Yisrael was a Holocaust survivor. In 1939, Yisrael was one of 160,000 Jews forced by the Nazis into the infamous ghetto in Lodz, Poland – a tiny area of only four square kilometers. Lodz had been home to the second-largest Jewish population in Europe after Warsaw. And all ...

Yet, against this historic backdrop, the fraying relations between Israel’s two key allies have forced the nation into a precarious dance. Beware: Your Facebook Activities Can Promote Anti-Semitism

April 27, 2018

Did you fall victim to the Facebook personality quiz billed as research for Britain’s Cambridge Analytica? If you did, you aren’t alone. Some 300,000 people took the quiz and unwittingly agreed to give not only their private data to Cambridge Analytica, but also the private data of their Facebook friends. The breach impacted 50 million Facebook users. The violation allowed Cambridge Analytica to create psychological profiles to predict way too much about users. Among them were disturbing t...

Time to reach out and build up

April 25, 2018

Two of the phrases we use when referring to our work at Jewish Voice Ministries are reaching out and building up. “Reaching out” refers to the work done through our Global Outreach team and volunteer partners during the many Medical Outreaches we hold in Africa and elsewhere. “Building up” is what our Congregation and Leadership Development team does through equipping, encouraging and strengthening the many congregations we serve. We do this through visits, providing resources, and in-person lea...
